Where the Desert Turns Gold: Xining to Kashgar by Luxury Train
Golden Autumn is a 7-day, 6-night Silk Road train journey from Xining to Kashgar, departing on 20 October 2027. It is timed for the short season when the desert poplars of Xinjiang turn gold. You spend three nights on the Silk Road Express and three in hotels, with meals, guides and touring included.
Few journeys show how much the Silk Road changes along its length. You begin among the prayer halls of a Tibetan Buddhist monastery near Xining, high on the edge of the plateau. Within the week you are walking the earthen lanes of Kashgar, where Uyghur craftsmen still work in the old town and the caravan routes once met.
In between, the land tells the story. The Qilian Mountains slide past the window, then the Tianshan. Wind-cut ridges rise from the desert near Hami, and in Turpan an ancient city stands carved out of the earth itself. Then come the poplars of the Tarim, their leaves turning gold beside the river. The days are full but never rushed. The train covers the long distances overnight, so you spend your time in the places, not on the road.
