EXPLORA II

A Journey of Aegean Allure & Ancient Echoes

8D7N - Istanbul - Athens

From the Bosphorus to the Acropolis: Istanbul to Athens by Luxury Cruise

This Istanbul to Athens cruise is a 7-night Explora Journeys voyage on EXPLORA II, sailing from 17 to 24 May 2027. It links Türkiye's Turquoise Coast with the Greek islands, calling at Marmaris, Bodrum, Patmos, Milos and Mykonos, with one day at sea. Dining, drinks, Wi-Fi and onboard gratuities are all included.

Few weeks at sea hold this much contrast. You set sail from a city of mosques and bazaars just before midnight. Overnight, the ship crosses the Sea of Marmara toward the Dardanelles and the open Aegean. From then on, a new harbour waits each morning. On the Turquoise Coast, pine-covered hills drop into clear bays, and castles built by a sultan and by crusader knights watch over the water.

Then the Greek islands change the mood. Patmos is quiet and devout, Milos wild and volcanic, Mykonos bright and sociable. Several ports keep the ship into the evening, so you can stay ashore for sunset and dinner by the sea. In mid-May the islands are warm and still ahead of the summer crowds. The journey ends in Athens, where the Parthenon has stood for nearly 2,500 years.

Route from Istanbul to Athens

Departure — Istanbul Arrival — Athens

01 / 08

  1. Day 1Istanbul, Türkiye

    Departure

    Monday, 17 May 2027 · Departs 23:55

Istanbul spans two continents, and your cruise starts here with a rare luxury: time. EXPLORA II sails at 23:55, so the day is yours before or after you board. The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace stand close together in Sultanahmet, and the Spice Bazaar fills the lanes of Eminönü with scent and colour. For dinner, take the ferry to Kadıköy on the Asian shore for meze and grilled fish, then watch the city lights fall away as you sail.

  2. Day 2At Sea

    Day at Sea

    Tuesday, 18 May 2027

Overnight, the ship crosses the Sea of Marmara and heads for the Dardanelles, the narrow strait that opens into the Aegean. This is your only full day at sea, and it comes at the right moment: after a big city and before five ports in a row. Sleep in, then spend the afternoon in the spa's thermal area, which is included in your fare. Later, choose dinner from Pan-Asian dishes at Sakura or the grill at Marble & Co.

  3. Day 3

    Marmaris, Türkiye

    Wednesday 19 May 2027 · 09:00–19:00

Marmaris sits at the head of a deep, pine-fringed bay, where wooden gulets and superyachts share the water below a hilltop castle linked to Suleiman the Magnificent. Walk the old town lanes up to the castle for views over the marina. Or make a day of it in Dalyan, known for its rock-cut tombs
above the river and İztuzu, the beach where loggerhead turtles nest. Prefer to stay close? A traditional hammam is the gentler choice.

  4. Day 4

    Bodrum, Türkiye

    Thursday 20 May 2027 · 09:00–21:00

Bodrum has a fishing town's ease and a cosmopolitan crowd. At the harbour, the Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 15th century, now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. A short walk inland, the site of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus marks one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. With departure at 21:00, there is time for a gulet trip to quiet coves and a dinner of fresh fish and meze in town.

  5. Day 5

    Patmos, Greece

    Friday 21 May 2027 · 09:00–19:00

Small, calm and deeply spiritual, Patmos is where tradition says St John wrote the Book of Revelation. The cave where he is said to have received it, the fortress-like Monastery of St John and the whitewashed hilltop town of Chora are together a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Head up from the harbour at Skala in the morning, then come back down for a swim in a sheltered cove and a slow lunch by the water.

  6. Day 6

    Milos, Greece

    Saturday 22 May 2027 · 09:00–22:00

In 1820 a farmer on Milos unearthed the Venus de Milo, now one of the Louvre's treasures. Today the island's draw is its volcanic coast: the white, wave-carved rocks of Sarakiniko, sea caves, hot springs and cliffs streaked red, pink and orange. The ancient marble theatre and early Christian
catacombs reward the curious. EXPLORA II stays until 22:00, so end the day in the hilltop village of Plaka, watching the sun set from the castle ruins.

  7. Day 7

    Mykonos, Greece

    Sunday 23 May 2027 · 09:00–21:00

Go ashore early and Mykonos Town feels almost private: whitewashed lanes, small chapels, the windmills on the ridge and the waterfront houses of Little Venice. A short boat ride away lies Delos, mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, once one of the great sanctuaries of ancient Greece and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Back in town, take a table in Chora for grilled fish and a Greek salad before the ship sails at 21:00.

  8. Day 8Piraeus (Athens), Greece

    Arrival

    Monday 24 May 2027 · Arrives 07:00

EXPLORA II reaches Piraeus, the port of Athens, at 07:00, and your cruise ends this morning. If your flight leaves later, or you would like a few more days, Athens rewards the time: the Acropolis and the Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum below them, and the busy streets of Plaka and Monastiraki.
Ask your CRUISELECT advisor about a hotel stay in the city or Explora's optional post-journey package.
