An Alaskan Coastal Passage from Whittier to Vancouver

There’s a certain pull to Alaska that feels both raw and quietly magnetic—this journey follows that feeling, moving through a chain of remote coastal communities where nature sets the pace. Departing from Whittier, surrounded by glaciers and steep mountain walls, the route unfolds into places where wildlife, culture, and landscape naturally intersect. In Icy Strait Point, the experience leans into indigenous heritage and marine life encounters, while Haines brings a quieter, more expansive setting shaped by rivers, forests, and open skies filled with eagles. Further along, Sitka introduces a deeper historical layer, blending native traditions with Russian influences, and Klawock offers a more intimate glimpse into local life, where totem art, wildlife, and untouched surroundings define the atmosphere.

Between these stops, the journey carries a natural rhythm—moments of movement balanced by stretches of open water where the scenery continues to evolve. The route gradually softens as it approaches Vancouver, where forested coastlines give way to a city known for its cultural diversity and easy connection to nature. Altogether, it’s a passage shaped by contrasts—remote yet welcoming, rugged yet reflective—offering a broad, immersive sense of Alaska without ever feeling rushed.

8 Days 7 Nights Whittier to Vancouver - Itinerary

Set amid dramatic mountains and glaciers at the head of Prince William Sound, Whittier is an excellent launching point for exploring Alaska’s pristine beauty. A boating or kayaking expedition through the icy fjords provides scenic views of the glaciated inlets and may also offer glimpses of sea otters, seals and breaching whales. Hikes along the local trails lead into the surrounding mountains and to waterfalls cascading from the icefields into the sound. A marvel of modern engineering and one of the longest highway tunnels in North America, the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel traverses the rugged wilderness and opens onto the charming harbor of Whittier. Once a military outpost, the tiny town does have a story to tell. Stop into the Prince William Sound Museum to learn about Whittier’s history as a naval port and rail terminal and discover the role Alaska played during World War II and the Cold War.

Whittier, Alaska

DAY 2 - 8

DAY 8

Begin with a relaxing day at sea, settling into the rhythm of the journey before arriving at Icy Strait Point, where Alaska Native heritage and wildlife-rich waters set the tone. Continue to Haines, surrounded by mountains and known for its abundant wildlife and dramatic fjord landscapes, then on to Sitka, where indigenous traditions and Russian history intertwine. Discover the quiet charm of Klawock and its deep-rooted Tlingit culture, before another day at sea offers time to unwind and reflect amid the vast coastal wilderness.

  • The transition begins as the coastline fades into open water. A day at sea introduces the slower rhythm of the journey, with uninterrupted horizons and time to settle into the experience.

  • The harbor of Icy Strait Point was purpose-built by Alaska Natives to welcome visitors to Chichagof Island, and you can learn about the indigenous Tlingit culture through traditional music and dance performances in the nearby village of Hoonah. On the waterfront, a restored cannery now houses a museum, local shops, and restaurants serving freshly caught crab and other delicious seafood, or you might go fishing for your own fresh salmon or halibut. Discover the island’s stunning scenery on an ATV expedition into the rainforest or by soaring over the canopy on one of the world’s longest and highest ziplines. To observe local wildlife, follow a guide in search of brown bears or the region’s many bird species in their natural habitat, or charter a boat to watch for humpbacks, orcas and sea lions in the surrounding waters. Kayaking and ocean rafting also provide excellent views of the flora and fauna from the sea.

  • Nestled on an inlet surrounded by snowcapped mountains, Haines is a picturesque town embraced by immense natural beauty. A great place to begin exploring is the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, home to the world's largest concentration of bald eagles. Watch for these majestic birds as well as brown bears, moose and other wildlife while rafting or boating along the gentle current of Chilkat River. Adventure seekers might ascend a rugged trail in an ATV for spectacular views from Takshanuk Mountain or paddle a kayak along Lynn Canal, the longest and deepest fjord in North America. The fjord can also be explored on a bicycle tour along an inlet leading to Chilkoot Lake, where emerald waters are surrounded by lush forests, waterfalls and glacial peaks. To take in sweeping views from above, board a seaplane for a flightseeing tour of nearby Glacier Bay. Those who stay in town can explore the region’s cultural heritage in the Haines Sheldon Museum and the Hammer Museum, the first in the world dedicated to the history of the tool.

  • Sitka’s identity is shaped by both Alaska Native and Russian influences. Walk through Sitka National Historical Park, where totem-lined trails meet coastal scenery, and visit landmarks such as St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Russian Bishop’s House. Beyond its history, Sitka Sound offers rich marine life, while nearby islands and forests invite exploration.

  • A tiny community on the rugged west coast of Prince of Wales Island, Klawock offers a unique opportunity to experience the untouched beauty of the remote Alaskan wilderness while also getting an authentic glimpse into the traditions and lifestyle of the locals that make their homes here. Klawock Totem Park is renowned for its collection of totem poles that reflect the artistry and culture of the Tlingit people, and you may have the opportunity to watch a master carver demonstrate the techniques used by local artisans to keep this ancient art form alive. The island is also home to many black bears and eagles, and a viewing platform at the Dog Salmon Fish Pass offers the chance to watch both species hunt for their dinner. Anglers may wish to fish for their own meal in Klawock’s pristine waters that teem with salmon and halibut. The unspoiled beauty of the region can also be enjoyed by whale-watching in the bay, hiking through the lush temperate rainforest, or kayaking on serene Klawock Lake.

  • A final day at sea creates space to reflect, as the shifting scenery gives way once more to open water and a quieter pace.

Arrival

In Gastown, heritage façades and cobbled streets lend a sense of history, while Granville Island hums with local creativity, from market halls to artisan studios. Nearby, Stanley Park unfolds as a serene urban retreat, where forested trails trace the shoreline past totem poles and open vistas. For a final perspective, the ascent of Grouse Mountain reveals sweeping views over the city and beyond, while the Capilano Suspension Bridge invites a last immersion into the surrounding rainforest—an evocative closing note to a journey defined by contrast, beauty, and discovery.
